Chicago Nutrition Education Center1924 West Chicago Avenue The Chicago Nutrition Education Center was funded as a cooperative project of the Erie Family Health Center and Near North Health Service Corporation, two community health centers that have worked in the largely minority and poor near northwest neighborhoods of Chicago. The center covers 8,200 square feet of physical space and includes a fully functioning Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) clinic and a Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP), known locally as Mothers and Children (MAC). Approximately 10,000 WIC clients and 200 CSFP clients are served annually. In addition to the WIC and CSFP programs, the center provides free and low-cost comprehensive nutrition services for low-income community residents and serves as a training and research center for nutrition students and professionals. The uniqueness of the center lies in its non-traditional education rooms. The center is equipped with a demonstration kitchen, WIC Mini-Mart, Mother's Room, resource room and a computer center. It is our belief that moving education out of a traditional classroom allows nutrition staff to offer more effective education programs emphasizing practical ways to modify food consumption patterns. Approximately 60 (31 Spanish and 25 English) nutrition classes are offered at the Center per month reaching almost 1,000 clients. Ninety-five percent of the WIC clients served at the Center receive one or more secondary nutrition education contacts per certification period. |

Winfield Moody Education Drop-In Center842 North Cambridge Avenue The NNHSC After School Drop-In Center is a prevention program housed in converted apartments in the Chicago Public Housing Authority's Cabrini Green public housing development. Opened in 1986, the Education Drop-In Center offers a safe haven for area children who range in age from five to 18 years-old. These are children at high-risk for gang involvement, school failure, teen parenting and substance abuse. Many of these children have siblings who belong to gangs or have become teen parents. To combat the unhealthy neighborhood problems that surround these children, we offer a variety of activities in a safe, home-like environment at the Education Drop-In Center. When onsite, youth participate in structured programs that foster positive behaviors and promote attitudes, that in turn counter the adverse impact of the dangerous environment in which they live. The Education Drop-In Center staff includes two full-time program coordinators, both indigenous to the community, who offer individual support and lead group activities with an average of 150 children annually. There is no cost for children to participate in the program. During the school year, the Drop-In Center is open from 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm Monday through Friday. The first order of business, is homework. The staff tutors children and insures that all homework assignments are complete before breaking into small groups for topical discussions. These prevention sessions focus on a range of issues such as coping with peer pressure, abstaining from alcohol and drugs, and conflict resolution. After these daily discussion hours, the children enjoy a snack before going home. Prevention activities continue during the summer months, when the Education Drop-In Center is open from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm Monday through Friday. Over the summer, a wider range of activities is offered. In addition to continuing the individual tutoring support for children enrolled in summer school, and the topical discussion groups, the staff coordinates activities in conjunction with the local park district, library and other organizations. Children enroll in organized softball leagues, take swimming lessons, or participate in reading programs and learning skills development sessions using computer assisted programs and videos. In the summer months children also take field trips to local points of interest and participate in developing creative projects. |
