Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. The month of February is dedicated to raising awareness about heart disease and increasing knowledge about prevention. Educate yourself on the dangers of heart disease and get on track to better heart health.* Coronary artery disease (CAD), also called heart disease or ischemic heart disease, results from a complex process known as atherosclerosis (commonly called "hardening of the arteries"). In atherosclerosis, fatty deposits (plaques) of cholesterol and other cellular waste products build up in the inner linings of the heart’s arteries. This causes blockage of arteries and prevents oxygen-rich blood from reaching the heart (ischemia). There are many steps in the process leading to atherosclerosis, some not fully understood.* A common symptom of coronary heart disease (CHD) is angina. Angina is chest pain or discomfort that occurs if an area of your heart muscle does not get enough oxygen-rich blood.* Fortunately, there are many things you can do to reduce your chances of getting heart disease. You should: Know your blood pressure and keep it under control, exercise regularly, don't smoke, get tested for diabetes and if you have it, keep it under control, know your cholesterol and triglyceride levels and keep them under control, eat a lot of fruits and vegetables, and maintain a healthy weight.* *Information Obtained From WebMD |
